130 maunds of hilsa have been caught in a fishing net in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata in Patuakhali.

Surya Majhi (55) caught in the net of the hilsa was sold for Tk 40 lakh.

This Saturday morning, these fish were brought to Alipur fish landing center of Kalapara upazila for sale.

Earlier last Thursday night, this huge amount of fish was caught in 60 km deep sea from Kuakata.

Last Wednesday, Surya Majhi along with 17 fishermen took a trawler from Chittagong’s Banshkhali to Patuakhali’s Alipur for fishing in the Bay of Bengal. Once after pulling the net, a large amount of hilsa was caught and they could not take the whole fish to the trawler, so they threw half of the net into the sea. The price of these hilsa is sold at 40 lakh taka.

Surya Majhi said, we go to the sea and pull the net full of fish. Never before have we caught so many fish in our nets. Later, as our trawler was full of fish, we left half the net with fish in the sea. This morning Alipore Fish Landing Center’s Aarde was sold by auction.

Kalapara senior upazila fisheries officer Apu Saha said that fishermen could not catch fish due to the outbreak of jelly fish in the sea for about a month. Now that the abundance of jellyfish has decreased somewhat, fishermen are able to cast their nets into the sea and most of the fishermen’s nets are catching the desired fish. We hope that when the rains start, fishermen will flock to the nets to catch various species of sea fish including hilsa.
