Tarique Rahman has formally assumed the role of chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The post became vacant following the passing of former prime minister and long-time party leader Khaleda Zia.
Party sources said the decision was taken at a Standing Committee meeting held at 9:30 pm on Tuesday night. The move was later confirmed through BNP’s official verified social media platform.
According to insiders, members of the Standing Committee unanimously agreed to appoint Tarique Rahman as party chairman in accordance with BNP’s constitution. With this decision, he officially takes charge of the party’s top leadership position.
Tarique Rahman had previously been serving as BNP’s acting chairman since 2018, a role he assumed after Khaleda Zia was imprisoned.
