US President Donald Trump has announced a 10 percent tariff on imports from eight European countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, citing their opposition to his stance on Greenland. The new tariffs will take effect on February 1, with the rate set to increase to 25 percent from June 1.

Trump made the announcement on Saturday through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He said all goods entering the United States from the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland would be subject to the tariff.

In his post, Trump claimed that Denmark should return Greenland after centuries, warning that global security is at risk. He alleged that China is seeking influence over Greenland and argued that Denmark lacks the capacity to prevent it.

He further accused the eight European nations of traveling to Greenland for “unclear motives” and said they were engaging in what he described as a highly dangerous strategy. According to Trump, decisive action is necessary to immediately end what he called a potentially serious threat.

Earlier, Trump had stated during a White House meeting that countries disagreeing with his position on Greenland could face trade penalties, emphasizing that the territory is critical to US national security.

Despite its small population, Greenland holds significant strategic and natural resource value. Its location between North America and the Arctic makes it vital for early missile detection systems and monitoring maritime movement in the region.
