A student at University of Dhaka was reportedly assaulted over allegations of links with the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The incident took place early Monday around 3 a.m. on the university campus. After the attack, the student—identified as Rahid Khan Pavel—was taken to Shahbagh Police Station. Pavel later claimed that activists associated with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were responsible for the assault.
Pavel is a student from the 2020–21 academic session in the Philosophy Department and lives at Bir Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall on campus.
Speaking early Monday, Pavel said he was beaten with bricks, belts, and a motorcycle lock. According to him, the assault began near Salimullah Muslim Hall, continued near the university’s VC Square, University of Dhaka, and later near the Tomb of Kazi Nazrul Islam before he was taken toward the police station. He also claimed he was attacked again near the station until police intervened.
Pavel alleged that several individuals linked to the student protest movement were involved in the assault.
One student leader present during the incident said Pavel had previously been accused of taking part in attacks during last year’s political protests and had earlier been boycotted by both his department and dormitory. He also claimed Pavel had recently organized gatherings with former members of the banned student group and had been seen putting up related posters on campus.
Another student activist said Pavel had long been known on campus as a supporter of the banned organization and had been expelled from both his hall and department, although it was unclear whether he had held any official position in the group.
Pavel, however, denied any political involvement, stating that he is a regular student who attends classes and has no ties to any political party.
Following the incident, police admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. An officer from Shahbagh Police Station said no formal complaint had been filed against him so far, adding that legal procedures are ongoing.
