Concerns over journalist safety have intensified after Mohammad Amiruzzaman Amir, Editor and Publisher of the national daily Khoborer Alo, filed a General Diary (GD) with Pallabi Police Station alleging threats against him and his family following the publication of a news report.

According to the complaint, Amir submitted the GD on Saturday, seeking legal protection after receiving what he described as intimidation and threats linked to a recently published investigative report.

Threat Allegations Following News Report

The dispute reportedly stems from a digital news article published on August 20 concerning allegations involving local political influence and identity changes connected to individuals accused in relation to the July–August student movement.

In the GD, Amir alleged that two individuals—identified as Sadaqat Khan Fakku and his son Imran Khan—became angered by the publication and subsequently threatened him.

Late-Night Phone Call

According to the complaint, at around 1:00 a.m. on August 21, Amir received a call from an unidentified WhatsApp number while he was in the Pallabi Section-12 area of Dhaka.

The caller allegedly identified himself as one of the individuals mentioned in the complaint and demanded that the report be removed within an hour. Amir claimed that he was warned of consequences if the report remained online and that threats were also directed toward members of his family.

The complaint further alleges that abusive language was used during the conversation.

Request for Security Measures

Amir told police that he fears potential harm to himself and his relatives and requested official documentation of the incident as well as security assistance to prevent any future untoward events.

He also urged authorities to take legal action against those responsible if the allegations are verified.

Police Response

A police official involved in the matter confirmed that the GD had been received and entered into the record.

Authorities stated that the allegations will be examined and that any necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Growing Attention on Journalist Safety

The incident has sparked discussion within media circles about the safety of journalists and the importance of protecting reporters and editors from intimidation related to their professional work.

As of now, the allegations remain under investigation, and no court has determined responsibility regarding the claims.
