The fire service and the personnel of some forces are trying to put out the fire in Amrbunia area of Chandpai range of East Sundarbans. A helicopter of Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force have joined the work in addition to Forest Guard-Fire Service from 9 am on Sunday.

A fire fighting team of 10 members under the leadership of Lt. Commander Arfatul Arefin of Naval Force Mongla Base started to douse the fire. Then the fire service members connected the pipe to lift the water from the nearby Bhola river. However, due to lack of tide in the river, there is a delay in water supply.

Mamun Ahmed, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense Bagerhat, said that due to the ebb of the Bhola river next to the forest, pipes and other equipment cannot be used to extinguish the fire. These will be crossed when the tide is high. But the fire is burning slowly.

Meanwhile, a three-member inquiry committee headed by Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Rana Dev of East Sundarbans Chandpai Range has been constituted in connection with the Sundarban fire incident. The East Sundarbans Division has directed the committee to submit its report within the next seven working days.

The other two members of the committee are Obaidur Rahman, station officer of Jeudhar in Chandpai range and Rabiul Islam, station officer of Dhansagar. This was confirmed by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of East Sundarbans Division Kazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir.

The fire started around 3 o’clock on Saturday in the drain area of Amarbunia patrol outpost in Chandpai range. In the meantime, the fire has burnt several kilometers of forest. Sundarban fire is still burning intermittently.

The fire service personnel went to the spot to douse the fire but could not start the fire as Saturday evening approached and there was no water source nearby. The work of extinguishing the fire started on Sunday morning.
