Thousands of people attended the funeral of President Ibrahim Raisi and his entourage who were killed in a helicopter crash. Many people gathered in a central location in Tabriz, the capital of the country’s East Azerbaijan province, on Tuesday to remember and mourn the late president.

Thousands of mourners are walking toward the central square carrying Iranian flags and photos of Raisi, Barron’s reported, citing the AFP news agency. There people from all walks of life will pay respect to Raisi.

The body of Iran’s President Ibrahim Raisi, who was killed in a helicopter crash, has not yet been taken to the country’s capital, Tehran. The bodies of all those killed, including Raisi, have been kept in the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran since Monday. The funeral will be held there. After that Raisi’s body will be taken to Tehran.

President Raisi went to inaugurate a dam jointly built by the two countries on Sunday (May 19) in the border area of ​​Azerbaijan. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was also there.

From there, Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian and other officials were returning to Tabriz, the capital of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, with a fleet of three helicopters.

On the way, the Bell-212 model helicopter carrying the president and the foreign minister crashed in a remote mountain near the Zolfa region of East Azerbaijan.

About 16 hours later, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News agency reported on Monday that the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ibrahim Raisi, had an accident while performing his duties for the country’s people. He was martyred. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian was also killed, among others.
