Justin Trudeau’s tenure as Canada’s Prime Minister is nearing its end, following his announcement in January that he would step down. On March 9, the Liberal Party will elect a new leader, who will also assume the role of Prime Minister. Reflecting on his decade in office, Trudeau became emotional and shed tears while speaking to the media on March 6.

During his remarks, Trudeau recalled the challenges Canada faced, particularly under Donald Trump’s presidency, when the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, later suspending it. Trudeau emphasized that he had always prioritized Canada’s interests in every decision. While discussing his government’s $10-per-day childcare policy, he grew visibly emotional, stating that he always put the country and its people first and would not disappoint Canadians even in his final days in office.

He also addressed global issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Middle East crisis, and Trump’s trade policies, acknowledging that they had complicated matters further. However, Trudeau asserted that Canada would not back down on U.S. tariff concerns, stating that the goal was to have them completely removed and that Canada must take a firm stance.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an order temporarily lifting tariffs on certain Canadian and Mexican goods. While he had already announced a one-month suspension of tariffs on Mexican products, the same policy will now apply to Canada. As a result, no additional tariffs will be imposed on Canadian and Mexican goods until at least April 2.
