The water in the rivers of Sunamganj is increasing due to the rain and the upstream

In Sunamganj, the water of various rivers including Surma river is increasing due to rain and upstream. However, there is no danger of major floods, said the local water development board (PUBO).

According to the information of Sunamganj village, the water level of Surma river was 6.98 cm at 3 o’clock on Thursday at Sholghar point of Surma river in Sunamganj town. At the same time yesterday, Thursday, the height of the water was 6.28 cm. In one day, the height of the water has increased by 10.70 cm. Here the water level of Surma river is 7.80 meters. As such, the river water is still below the danger level. Sunamganj has received 39 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. At the same time it is also raining in Cherrapunji, upstream of Sunamganj in India. That’s why the hills are coming down from upstream. Although there is less rain in Sunamganj, water is rising in the river and Howar due to the fall of the upstream.

Jadukata, Patlai of Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, Rakti, Boulai, Chatak Chela of Vishwambharpur upazila, Chachi of Sunamganj Sadar upazila, Kushiara of Jagannathpur upazila are rising. But there is still less water in Howar.

Akram Uddin, a resident of Ibrahimpur village on the bank of Surma River in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, said that the water in the river is increasing. Due to floods in some parts of Sylhet, local people are afraid of floods in Sunamganj too.

Sunamganj Paubo executive engineer Mamun Howladar told Prothom Alo that the water of the Surma river is rising due to rain and downhill runoff from upstream. If the upstream tide continues to fall, the water will continue to rise. In this the water of Surma river may cross the border. However, they do not see any danger of flood in Sunamganj yet.
