In Sunamganj, the water of rivers and streams is increasing again due to rain and uphill slopes

In Sunamganj, the water level of all the rivers in the district has increased in the last 24 hours due to the rain and landslides. Some rural roads of three bordering Doarabazar upazila and two unions of Chatak upazila have been flooded. The water of river Surma is flowing 65 cm above the boundary line.

Earlier last Friday and Saturday, due to lack of rain, the water level of the rivers decreased a little. At the same time Cherrapunji in India, upstream of Sunamganj received less rain. However, it started raining again from last night. At the same time it is raining in Cherrapunji. It is downhill. Water is rising in rivers and streams.

According to information of Sunamganj Water Development Board (PUBO), the water level of Surma river was at 7.53 meters at nine o’clock in the morning on Monday at Sholghar point of Sunamganj town. The previous day at the same time, the water level was 7.34 meters. Here, the height of water has increased by 16 cm in 24 hours. Here the water level of Surma river is 7.80 meters. As such, the river water is still below the danger level. Sunamganj has received 53 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

The water level of Surma river was 9.33 meters near Chatak town at nine o’clock this morning. The previous day the water here was 9.21 meters. Here the water of Surma river is 65 cm above the danger limit. Apart from this, the water of Jadukata, Patnai, Kushiara, Naljur, Chela, Chakri, Rakti, Boulai rivers in Sunamganj has increased. This water is entering the Howr.

Local residents say that water is needed in Hawar now. If there is no water in the Haor during monsoon, people have to suffer in transportation. Again, water is needed for fish.

Mohibul Islam, a resident of Mainpur village on the banks of Surma River in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila, said that the water level had decreased slightly in the middle of two days. It has increased again today (Monday). The water in the river is rising.

In Doarabazar upazila, the communication of three unions with the upazila headquarters has been cut off due to the inundation of the road. The soil of the connecting road of the bridge in front of the government technical school and college on the Doarabazar-Boglabazar road has shifted. Lakshmipur, Boglabazar and Surma unions are disconnected from the upazila headquarters.

Chairman of Surma Union Parishad (UP) Harun Or Rashid said that residents have to change cars at two places on this road. Damaged roads are being repaired.

Islampur and Norai Union on the border of Chatak Upazila have flooded the lower areas. People are suffering as roads are flooded.

Mamun Howlader, executive engineer of Sunamganj office of Water Development Board, told Prothom Alo that the water in the district’s rivers and streams has increased again due to the rains and downhills from the upstream. The water of Surma river may cross the border. However, there is no major flood risk in Sunamganj.
