Yet another sleepless night has passed the people of Sylhet city. Most of the areas of the city have been submerged in several hours of heavy rain that started from last Sunday midnight. The rain that continued till Monday morning flooded houses and shops in hundreds of areas of the city.

Water entered many important buildings including Osmani Medical College Hospital. Several main roads have been submerged in rain water. The city dwellers kept vigil at night to prevent water from entering the house. However, the end was not saved. Before this, five upazilas of Sylhet were submerged in a night’s downpour last Wednesday. This time the city dwellers witnessed this horror. However, since there was no rain in the last two days, the flood situation in Sylhet improved a lot. As a result, the people of Sylhet were relieved in the hope that the water would go down quickly. However, it rained in Sylhet last Sunday afternoon. Then from that night until Monday morning the folds of worry again fell on their foreheads.

Sylhet Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib said that 226.6 millimeters of rain fell in Sylhet in 24 hours from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Monday. And from 6 am to 9 am it rained 28 mm.

Locals said that there was already flood water in some areas of the city. Surma river was also in water. As a result, the heavy rain of 24 hours could not come down to the river. Instead, new areas of the city began to sink after the river overflowed from midnight on Sunday. Water enters houses and shops.

Roads in suburban areas of the city were already waterlogged. On Sunday night, water entered the ground floor of almost all the houses in this area. Shahajan Ahmad, a resident of ‘D’ block in the suburb, said yesterday morning, “There is knee-deep water inside the house and waist-deep water on the road.” I can neither stay in the house nor go out. Year after year this suffering does not feel good anymore.

Journalist Sangram Singh lives on the fourth floor of a house in this area. He said, ‘wake up and see I’m on an island! All around is water and water. I feel like I’m floating in it.

Lawyer Debbrat Chowdhury Liton, a resident of Mirzajangal area of ​​the city, said another sleepless night was spent in fear and anxiety on Sunday. Water entered the house once at 1 am. Everyone in the house made a dam around the house to irrigate the water. Water entered the house again around 4 am. All the furniture in the house is getting destroyed. The water is rising in the morning.

Rajatkanti Gupta, a resident of Jamtala area of ​​the city, president of Sylhet Sammilita Natya Parishad, said that water entered the house again on Sunday night. Earlier, during the 2022 flood, water also entered. However, if effective measures were taken to deal with floods then this suffering would not have been repeated.

Public Relations Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Sajlu Laskar said that some areas of nine wards of the city were flooded earlier. Almost all the wards of the city have been submerged in the rain on Sunday night.

He said that the water of Surma river is already above the danger limit. So the rain water could not go down through the river.

Meanwhile, rainwater has entered the ground floor of Osmani Medical College and Hospital. College students and hospital patients have suffered. Around 200 patients on the ground floor of the hospital were shifted to various upper floors in the morning due to rising water. The pathological examination was also closed till noon. However, after the water receded in the afternoon, all services started.

Dr. Deputy Director of this hospital. Soumitra Chakraborty said, water services were disrupted in the morning. Many items were also destroyed. Water also entered the hospital’s generator room.

Classes and exams were canceled yesterday in most of the schools and colleges in Sylhet city due to rising water. Apart from this, electricity supply has been stopped in most areas of the city since night.
