A customer has complained about the disappearance of 149 gold ornaments from a bank locker in Chittagong. The allegation has been made against Islami Bank Chittagong Nagar Chawkbazar branch. The female customer named Rokeya Bari made this complaint at Chawkbazar Police Station of the city at around nine o’clock today Monday night. Four bank officials were accused in this.
The accused persons are Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited Muhammad Munirul Mawla, Company Secretary JQM Habib Ullah, Manager and Senior Vice President of Chowkbazar branch SM Shafiqul Mawla Chowdhury and the officer in charge of the locker. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chawkbazar police station Wali Uddin Akbar told Prothom Alo tonight that a customer has filed a written complaint with the police station accusing four people including the bank manager. Since this is a bank matter, the complaint is being referred to the ACC as it is under the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) schedule.
Rokeya Bari mentioned in the complaint that he has a bank account and locker in Islami Bank Chittagong Nagar Chawkbazar branch. Last Wednesday she went to the bank to get some jewelry. Then an officer of the bank in charge of the locker opened the locker with the key and saw that it was already open. Later he saw in the locker that except for 10 to 12 pieces of gold, the remaining 149 pieces of gold ornaments were missing. He immediately reported the matter to the OC of Chawkbazar police station. The OC went to the bank with the police force and saw that there was no gold ornaments in that locker. Rokeya also mentioned that out of 149 pieces of gold ornaments, 40 were bangles (60 pieces), neck and earring set 25 pieces, neck set 10 pieces, five hand rings 15 pieces, neck chain. Seven 28 pieces, earrings 30 pairs 11 pieces.
Islami Bank’s Senior Vice President (SVP) and Chawkbazar branch manager SM Shafiqul Mawla Chowdhury told reporters last Sunday about Rokeya Akhter’s complaint, “I have reported the complaint of missing gold to the higher authorities and an internal investigation committee has been formed to find out the truth of the complaint.”
Regarding the safety of the lockers in the bank, this official said, ‘The key to the main gate of the locker is only with their designated officer. There is no opportunity for the key of the locker to be with anyone other than the customer. Even a designated representative of the customer cannot open the locker. Each locker requires two keys to open. One of which is with the customer and the other with the bank. It is not possible to open the locker in any way with only the key kept in the bank without the customer’s key. No one in the bank has a chance to know about the goods kept in the locker and its amount except the customer.
