Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali informed the Parliament that the process of preparing the list of top defaulting individuals and institutions is underway. He gave this information in response to the question of MP Farida Yasmin of the Awami League reserved women’s seat in the parliament meeting today on Monday.

Farida Yasmin wanted to know the names of the top 30 loan defaulters in her query.

Meanwhile, the recently released data of Bangladesh Bank on loan defaults showed that at the end of March this year, the amount of defaulted loans stood at Tk 1 lakh 82 thousand 295 crores. Last December, its amount was one lakh 45 thousand 633 crores. In the span of three months, the amount of defaulted loans has increased by Tk 36 thousand 662 crores.

In response to the question of Awami League party MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury Shawon, the finance minister said that various preventive measures have been taken including identification of defaulting borrowers and willful defaulting borrowers following the prescribed process and taking appropriate legal measures against the said borrowers to stop the loan scams of financial institutions.

The finance minister also said that provisions related to defaulting borrowers and willful defaulting borrowers have been included in the existing law and accordingly circulars have been issued by issuing necessary instructions from Bangladesh Bank. Also, in order to ensure proper utilization of loans, financial institutions have been instructed to regularly monitor the disbursed loan money so that it is not used in other sectors instead of the intended sector and the money is used properly.
