Bangladesh at dire risk of drugs due to geography: President

President Md. Sahabuddin said drug abuse and illegal trafficking is a global problem that threatens the existence of human society. Despite not being a drug producing country, Bangladesh is under dire threat of drugs due to its geographical location. In order to develop the youth of the country as smart citizens, along with regular education, sports, cultural practices, social movements should be developed against various inconsistencies, prejudices and drugs in the society. He said these things in a message given on the occasion of ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ on Wednesday (June 26).

The President said that there is no alternative to make the young generation smart citizens in building a developed and prosperous Bangladesh.

He welcomed the initiative of the Directorate of Narcotics Control to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking declared by the United Nations in Bangladesh like other countries of the world with the determination to make Bangladesh drug free.

The President said that the youth and youth of Bengal have a glorious history of struggle against injustice, protest and playing a leading role in the great liberation war. Due to the emergence of new drugs and the increase in abuse, the progress of this youth is hindered today.

The President said that to save the future generation of the country from the scourge of drugs, people from all walks of life including the family should play a united role. Children should be made aware from early age with satsang and good advice. In this context, he thinks that this year’s theme of the day announced by the United Nations, ‘The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention’, is very timely.

The President also said that in order to create a drug-free society, the people of all levels of the society should be involved in the effective implementation of the policy of zero tolerance against drugs announced by the Prime Minister. Besides, everyone should come forward to implement multi-dimensional prevention programs with the aim of ensuring treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts and creating widespread public awareness about the evils of drug abuse. He urged all concerned including the Narcotics Control Department to play a more effective role in this regard.

The President wished the success of all the programs undertaken on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
