The Government of Bangladesh has approved the purchase of an additional 50,000 metric tons of non-Basmati parboiled rice from India, with an estimated cost of Tk 240.80 crore. The decision was finalized during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Economic Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on April 17. According to meeting sources, the rice will be imported under Package-12 from Indian firm M/s Pattabhi Agro Foods Pvt. Ltd. through an international open tender for the fiscal year 2024–25. The price per metric ton has been set at USD 394.77. The Food Ministry’s proposal for the procurement received final approval during the session. This move follows several previous import authorizations from India since last year. In addition to India, rice is also being imported from Myanmar, Singapore, Pakistan, and Vietnam. The committee also approved imports of soybean oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), fertilizers, and rice bran oil during the meeting.
