Sylhet has been drowned for the sixth time in the current monsoon season due to continuous rains for several days and the water coming down from the mountain streams coming down from the upstream of India. Waterlogging has already occurred in various parts of the city. Goainghat, Companiganj, Jaintapur and other bordering upazilas are facing flood situation.

According to the Meteorological Department, Sylhet received 294 millimeters of rain in 25 hours from 6:00 am on Monday to 7:00 am on Tuesday.

Roads and houses in several areas of Sylhet city have been submerged in water. Among these, waterlogged conditions have been created in several areas of the city including Mirzajangal, Manipuri Rajbari, Taltala, Jamtala, Kuarpa Shibganj, Shahjalal Upshahar, Hawapara, Jatarpur, Mendibagh, Topkhana, Majumdari, Chowkidekhi, Dakshin Surma. The residents of the city are suffering.

Himanshu Chandra Sheel, a resident of Jamtala area of ​​the city, said that he does not remember how many times water has risen in his house this season. Every time the water rises, leave the rented house and go to the house of relatives.

Nabbir Hossain, a resident of Shahjalal suburb of the city, said that water rises whenever something happens in the suburb. It is not possible to stay on the ground floor of the house. This requires urgent action. He said that the main road in the suburbs is submerged in water. The situation at home is even worse.

Meanwhile, at four points in Surma and Kushiara in Sylhet, the water has crossed the limit. According to the Water Development Board (PUBO) Sylhet, the water of Surma river has exceeded the limit at Kanighat point. At that point in the river at 9 am today, water was flowing 118 cm above the flood line. Apart from this, the water has crossed the limit at Amalshid, Sheola, Sherpur and Fenchuganj points of Kushiara river. The water of Sari River has crossed the limit at Goainghat Point.

Earlier in Sylhet, the first phase of flood situation occurred due to heavy rains since last May 28. Later on June 16, the residents of Sylhet again suffered due to flood situation. All in all, the residents of Sylhet city have been affected by waterlogged conditions for the sixth time this season.

Deepak Ranjan Das, executive engineer of Paubo Sylhet, told Prothom Alo that heavy rainfall in Cherrapunji, India is a concern for Sylhet. Cherrapunji has received reports of 500 mm rainfall in the last 48 hours till 6 pm yesterday. There is a chance of more rain. Apart from this, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Sylhet. He said, the water in the rivers increases due to the landslides in India. Earlier two rounds of landslides and heavy rains in Sylhet caused flood situation. As there was no rain for several days, the situation was improving. Now heading towards flood situation again.
