BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reiterated that the party also supports reforms, dismissing attempts by certain government figures to portray BNP as being anti-reform. Speaking at a memorial event marking the first death anniversary of former Attorney General and BNP Vice Chairman A J Mohammad Ali at the Supreme Court auditorium on Thursday evening (May 8), he criticized the growing complexity of the situation, saying that new reform lists are emerging daily, creating more confusion. Fakhrul emphasized that BNP’s struggle has always been for the restoration of democracy, which still remains unfulfilled. He pointed out that although the discourse suggests reforms must precede elections, BNP has long advocated for systemic reforms. He condemned the narrative implying BNP only wants power without change, asserting that the party seeks power through democratic elections to serve the people. Stressing that reform is an ongoing process that could take years, he questioned whether the country would continue under unelected bureaucrats for that long, labeling 90% of the secretariat as collaborators of authoritarian rule. He argued that indefinite, unelected interim governments only breed uncertainty, harming investment, the economy, and sectors like garments and healthcare. Fakhrul also highlighted the lack of economic discipline and failure to support entrepreneurs over the last 15 years. He warned against making unilateral decisions without national consultation, calling for transparency and dialogue. Referring to the return of the BNP Chairperson as a symbol of renewed hope, he urged for national unity and responsible leadership, reminding that justice remains elusive for the tens of thousands falsely charged, disappeared, or killed.
