Interim Government to be formed on emergency basis: President

President Md. Sahabuddin said, it has been decided to form an interim government on an urgent basis. The interim government formed in consultation with all parties and stakeholders will hold general elections as soon as possible. The decision was taken in a meeting with the President of the three armed forces, leaders of various political parties and civil society representatives at Bangabhaban on Monday. At the end of the meeting, the President addressed the nation on Monday night. Sahabuddin informed about this decision.

He said, “You know Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has submitted her resignation letter to the President today and I have accepted it. The Prime Minister’s resignation and the situation created by the anti-discrimination student movement were discussed today (Monday) at Bangabhaban with the heads of three forces and leaders of various political parties, civil society representatives and some coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement. At the outset, the army chief briefed me about the overall situation and his discussions with the political parties. Political leaders also presented their statements at this time.

The president also said that the condolence resolution was accepted in the meeting in memory of those killed in the anti-discrimination student movement. All the prisoners, including those detained in anti-discrimination student movement and various false cases, will be released. Compensation will be given to the families of the victims of the anti-discrimination student movement and all necessary assistance will be provided for the proper treatment of the injured. It was unanimously decided to release BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The President said, “I call on the political parties to restore law and order situation in the country and stop looting and destructive activities. I am directing the armed forces to take strict action to protect the lives and property of the people and state assets. Urging everyone to come forward to ensure communal harmony and security of minorities and protect government property.

The President urged everyone to play an effective role in order to keep the country’s economy, administration and industries running. Sahabuddin He said, ‘I call on everyone to play an effective role in order to keep the country’s economy, administration and industries running. The educational institutions will be opened soon subject to discussions with student leaders and teachers. Apart from this, those involved in killings and violence will be brought under the law through impartial investigation. According to the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the current parliament will be dissolved immediately. All offices and courts of the country will run normally from Tuesday.

Urging the countrymen to protect the country’s resources, the President said, ‘Let us work together to save the country. I humbly appeal to everyone to forget mutual hatred and rise above revenge to play a role from their respective positions to move the country forward.
