BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the current embarrassing situation could have been avoided if the government had heeded BNP’s earlier recommendation regarding the trial of the Awami League. Speaking at a discussion organized by Citizen’s Initiative, Citizen’s Coalition, and Citizens for Constitutional Reform at the Mother Language Institute on Sunday (May 11), he questioned why BNP would need to raise its voice at Shahbagh when the party had already submitted a written demand to the Chief Adviser months ago. He welcomed the government’s move to amend the International Crimes Tribunal law to include the trial of Awami League, noting that BNP respects the people’s aspirations regarding the potential banning of the party. Accusing the Awami League of operating like a mafia rather than a political party, Salahuddin emphasized that steps should be taken to ensure no local or international actor can dispute the legitimacy of their trial. He also warned that if a clear election roadmap is not announced soon, further embarrassing scenarios could unfold. Salahuddin concluded by stating that a large constitution alone does not ensure prosperity, adding that Bangladesh’s constitution has become infected with partisan influence and needs reform, which can be achieved without convening a constituent assembly.
