Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has expressed confidence that national elections will be held sometime between December of this year and June of the next. Speaking at the party’s central Majlis-e-Shura session in Dhaka on Saturday, May 24, he stated that Jamaat is not seeking to force an election but rather to assist in facilitating one. He urged all organizations to support the government in the interest of national unity, warning that no one would be able to escape responsibility if the nation faces further crisis.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman emphasized that the current situation demands the interim government to prioritize the national interest by calling for an all-party dialogue, which could lead to positive outcomes. He noted that Jamaat has already initiated discussions with various political parties to find a common solution to the growing sense of fear and uncertainty among the public.
Regarding the election process, he remarked that due to the actions of past governments, the public has grown disinterested in voting. To make the upcoming election meaningful, credible reforms are essential—yet no clear roadmap has been presented to the people. Without legitimacy and transparency, he warned, the election risks being rejected by the citizens.
Dr. Rahman also demanded justice for the killings and disappearances during the July protests, warning that failure to address those crimes could plunge Bangladesh into deeper darkness. On the issue of the proposed humanitarian corridor, he stated that it involves matters of national security and urged the government to proceed with careful deliberation and input from all stakeholders.
Touching on national trade interests, he cautioned against hasty decisions regarding the Chittagong Port, upon which 70% of the country’s commerce depends. He also warned against actions that might politicize or harm the image of the army, calling it a source of national pride that should remain above controversy.
