The water level of Kaptai Dam has approached the danger mark, prompting the authorities to open 16 gates on Sunday morning (August 25). Each gate was opened by 6 inches to release excess water.

Earlier, on Saturday night (August 24) at 10 PM, the Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station announced the opening of 16 spillway gates by 6 inches due to the rising water level in the Kaptai Lake. Authorities have urged the downstream residents not to panic, assuring that the release of water will not significantly impact the Karnaphuli River or the downstream areas.

It has been reported that continuous rainfall over the past week, combined with the inflow of water from upstream, has led to a rise in the water level of Kaptai Lake. This has resulted in the flooding of low-lying areas in several upazilas, causing a sudden flood situation.

As of 4 PM on Saturday, the water level of Kaptai Lake stood at 107.67 feet above the Mean Sea Level (MSL).
