Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently made an important comment on the current position of Bangladesh and its former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which has sparked a new discussion in international politics. In an interview given to the Indian media Firstpost, he said that the ousted Sheikh Hasina should stay in India. According to him, Sheikh Hasina’s stay abroad may be somewhat justified in the context of internal political unrest in Bangladesh.

The interview was conducted by Palki Sharma, Managing Editor of Firstpost. He asked Ranil Wickramasinghe about Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India and its impact on Delhi-Dhaka relations. Wickramasinghe directly said, “We must first bring stability to Bangladesh and bring back the confidence of the people.” According to him, in view of the current tension in Bangladesh, the regional and international society should come forward to help Bangladesh.
Responding to a question about the possibility of Sheikh Hasina returning to the country, Wickramasinghe added, “If Sheikh Hasina wants to stay out of the country, stay out.” It is clear from this statement that he thinks that in the current political situation of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina’s stay abroad can be normal and it can be a strategic move to restore the country’s stability.

Wickramasingh’s speech expressed concern about Bangladesh’s internal problems and stability. He said that Bangladesh needs the help of the regional community, especially India and other South Asian countries, to overcome this instability.
In the interview, he further discussed the current situation in Bangladesh, especially the economic situation in Bangladesh. Wickramasinghe gave a message to the investors, “I will tell the investors that you should not leave Bangladesh. May stability return there soon.” According to him, the presence of investors in the economy of Bangladesh is very important and it can be helpful in the reconstruction of the country.
Wickramasinghe also commented on the recent increased powers given to the army in Bangladesh. According to him, “It was necessary to give additional powers to the army, and it is the right move in the current situation.” The role of the army in Bangladesh’s law and order situation and administrative activities has been enhanced, which he feels can help ensure the country’s stability.

The Sri Lankan president added, “It is up to the people to decide how they want to run the country.” According to him, the decision about the future of Bangladesh should be in the hands of the people and it is necessary to take this decision through elections in a democratic process. He asserted that “Bangladesh’s future is very promising” and that the country’s prospects will be brighter if stability is restored.
Ranil Wickramasinghe’s comments are important not only for Bangladesh, but also for regional politics and the geopolitical context of South Asia. The comments have sparked renewed debate about Sheikh Hasina’s political legacy in Bangladesh and the potential impact of her stay abroad on the country’s domestic and regional relations.

These comments come especially at a time when political unrest in Bangladesh and uncertainty over the elections have arisen. Awami League’s tenure under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina and its aftermath have been discussed in the regional circles, and Ranil Wickramasinghe’s statement has made that discussion more heated.
