After the interim government took power in Bangladesh, authorities have reportedly adopted a stricter stance towards West Bengal fishermen. This has drawn complaints from West Bengal’s fishing community, who recently held a press conference on the issue. They expressed that, during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, Bangladeshi authorities would typically return West Bengal fishermen if they entered Bangladeshi waters. Now, however, they are being detained.
Satyanath Patra, Secretary of the Indian Fishermen’s Association, strongly condemned this shift. He noted that under the previous government, fishermen were released and treated leniently, whereas now they are being detained. “If they continue to detain our fishermen, we will not tolerate Bangladeshi fishermen entering Indian waters,” he warned.
