Two cyclists were killed when a cement-laden truck ran over them in Meherpur Sadar Upazila. The accident took place in Chandbil area of ​​Meherpur-Chuadanga road of the upazila at around 7:30 am on Monday.

 

One of the dead has been identified. His name is Hasan Ali (21). He is the son of Liton Ali of Chandbil village of Sadar Upazila. Hasan was a fourth year graduate student of Meherpur Government College.

The police could not identify the name and address of the other deceased. However, he is said to be a hawker by profession. His age is approximately 23 years. The police arrested the truck driver Babul Ali (37) in this incident. Babul is the son of Kashem Ali of Shalika village in Magura.

According to witnesses and the police, two youths were riding a bicycle from Chandbil village on the Meherpur-Chuadanga road towards Paur city this morning. At that time, a cement-laden truck was also heading towards Meherpur city. The truck lost control before an oil pump in Chandbil area of ​​Meherpur Sadar and hit the two cyclists. Two were killed on the spot. On receiving information, two teams of fire service and police went to the spot and recovered the body. The police arrested the truck driver Babul from there.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Sheikh Koni Mia said that the fire service personnel recovered the body and sent it to the Meherpur General Hospital morgue. After the autopsy, a case will be filed under the Road Transport Act.

Meherpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Circle) Abdul Karim told Prothom Alo that local residents were killed in several road accidents in Chandbil area. It is initially known that these accidents are happening due to the carelessness of the drivers who are sleepy in the morning after driving the truck all night.
