The interim government has voiced strong concern over the attack on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with Jatiya Nagorik Party leaders Akhter Hossen and Tasnim Jara, in New York on Monday.

According to reports, the assault was linked to supporters of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and has been denounced as a politically motivated act.

In a statement, the interim administration said, “This disgraceful incident reflects the divisive political climate fostered during Hasina’s tenure. We remain committed to breaking away from that legacy and building a peaceful, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously arranged security protocols for the Chief Adviser’s U.S. visit. The delegation initially passed through a secure VVIP gate upon landing at JFK Airport. But unexpected visa complications forced them to exit through a different route.

Despite repeated requests for continued VVIP access and security, airport authorities declined, which left the visiting leaders exposed to threats.

After the incident, Bangladesh’s mission in New York immediately engaged with the NYPD. One suspect has been detained, and a full investigation is in progress.

Security measures for the Chief Adviser and the official team have since been tightened. The interim government added that it is working closely with U.S. federal and local authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of its representatives abroad.

Reaffirming its position, the government said that any attempt at political intimidation or violence—whether at home or overseas—will face firm legal and diplomatic action.
