Legal Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul stated that those involved in the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist will be brought to justice. Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Law on Sunday, April 13, he said that although hackers initially planned to steal $2 billion, they managed to siphon off $88 million. According to him, the attack was part of a broader attempt to cripple Bangladesh's economy, and the former authoritarian government had allegedly tried to protect local perpetrators by suppressing the initial findings.
Nazrul mentioned that a review committee, which includes him, has been formed. So far, $66 million has been recovered, and efforts are ongoing to retrieve the rest. He added that renowned lawyer Dr. Kamal Hossain will be overseeing the legal aspects of the case, with findings expected within the next three months.
The legal adviser also noted that 7,184 politically motivated cases have been withdrawn. He confirmed that the charge sheet in the case of Achiya from Magura has been prepared and will be submitted to court immediately, with a promise of expedited proceedings.
Regarding actress Meghna Alam, Nazrul acknowledged that her arrest process was not entirely proper but clarified that there are specific allegations against her, which are currently under review by law enforcement and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
On the matter of repealing the Special Powers Act, Nazrul emphasized the need for political consensus, stating that discussions on the issue are ongoing.
