Legal Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul emphasized that the July mass uprising was a continuation of the vision, determination, and patriotism that inspired the martyred intellectuals to fight for the country. He highlighted how the youth and students, disregarding the risks to their lives, fought for democracy, human rights, equality, and a society free of exploitation. He urged everyone to ensure that the second opportunity to build the nation, achieved through the sacrifices of young people, is not squandered.
Dr. Nazrul made these remarks on Saturday morning (December 14) after paying homage at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, speaking to journalists.
Reflecting on the past, the Legal Adviser noted, “Despite the immense sacrifices of 1971, including the loss of countless intellectuals, we failed to realize the dream of an ideal Bangladesh. The dominance of one-party ideology and the failures of leadership brought us close to losing that vision. We must ensure that such failures are never repeated.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, stated that the interim government is committed to upholding the ideals and aspirations of the martyred intellectuals.
Earlier, at around 7:00 AM, President Md. Sahabuddin paid tribute to the nation’s brightest minds, followed by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus at 7:15 AM.
On December 14, 1971, just two days before Bangladesh’s final victory in the Liberation War, the occupying Pakistani forces and their local collaborators executed the country’s most brilliant minds to render the nation intellectually crippled. This targeted massacre carried immense significance, as it was a heinous act of vengeance for their impending defeat. The anti-liberation forces blinded and executed the listed intellectuals, attempting to darken the future of independent Bangladesh.
To commemorate the day, discussions and memorial events will be held at district and sub-district levels. Special prayers and services will also take place in mosques, temples, churches, pagodas, and other places of worship.
