Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that no action has been taken so far against former President Abdul Hamid because the government is committed to ensuring that innocent individuals do not face punishment. However, he emphasized that if allegations against Hamid are proven, legal action will be taken. He made these remarks on Monday, June 9, during a visit to Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka.
The Home Affairs Advisor further noted that no major incidents occurred during the Eid celebrations, and the overall situation remained stable as expected. He stressed that the government is working to ensure that no one is punished without evidence, and that every case is being thoroughly investigated before taking any steps.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the former president’s recent foreign travel, the Home Affairs Advisor said that the investigation into the actions taken against the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kishoreganj and the assigned investigating officers is still ongoing.
He also commented on the overall environment and resources available at the Jatrabari Police Station, adding that law and order remained stable throughout the Eid-ul-Adha period.
It is noteworthy that former President Abdul Hamid returned to Bangladesh in the early hours of Sunday, June 8, aboard a Thai Airways flight after medical treatment in Thailand. Previously, on May 8, he had left Dhaka for Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight (TG 340).
His departure had sparked significant political developments in the country. Following widespread protests, on May 10, the interim government suspended all activities of the Awami League until the completion of its trials at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Abdul Hamid, who remained in Bangladesh after the fall of the Awami League on August 5 last year amid intense student and public protests, left for Bangkok for medical treatment after nine months.
Reportedly, a murder case was filed against Abdul Hamid on January 14 this year at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station. The case also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul, and Obaidul Quader.
Abdul Hamid served as the President of Bangladesh for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2023 under the Awami League government.
