Home Adviser Acknowledges Slight Deterioration in Law and Order Situation
Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has admitted that the country’s law and order situation has slightly worsened in recent days, following several incidents across the nation.
Speaking after inaugurating an election training program at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, he said, “The law and order situation had been stable for a long time. But in light of recent events over the past few days, I would say it has somewhat deteriorated. We are working to restore it to its previous state as quickly as possible.”
Responding to questions about the unstable situation in Rajbari, the Home Adviser said, “We are investigating the Rajbari incident. Five individuals have already been brought under legal action. The full picture will emerge once the investigation is complete, and it will be clear who was involved.”
When asked whether a proper investigation is possible while keeping the DC and SP, who may have been negligent, in their positions, he replied, “Whether there was negligence or not will be determined during the investigation. Removing officials prematurely would undermine the process. If someone is proven guilty, action will be taken; if found innocent, no measures will be taken against them.”
Regarding criticism about failing to prevent mob attacks despite prior social media warnings, including a recent incident in Hathazari, the Home Adviser rejected such claims, saying, “We have not failed. Those responsible will be brought to justice. The situation reflects growing impatience in society, so we urge everyone to remain calm and patient.”
On concerns that these incidents could hinder public participation in the upcoming elections, he added, “Once people become focused on voting, no one can stop them. No one has the power to prevent citizens from reaching polling stations.”
