Former NBR official Matiur Rahman, recently in the spotlight due to the "goat scandal," has been placed under three-day police remand. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhtar approved the remand yesterday in a case filed under the Arms Act.
Early Wednesday morning, Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Matiur Rahman and his wife, former Upazila Chairman Laila Kaniz Laki, from a residential area in Vatara, Dhaka. DMP spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman confirmed that Laki has been handed over to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). A shotgun was reportedly recovered from Matiur, leading DB Sub-Inspector Belal Hossain to file a case at Vatara Police Station.
Meanwhile, Laila was sent to jail by Dhaka Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain in connection with an ACC case. A hearing for her remand application is set for January 19. The ACC had filed a case against Laila on January 6, accusing her of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 13.01 crore and concealing information on assets worth Tk 1.53 crore. Matiur Rahman has also been implicated for allegedly aiding in the acquisition of these assets.
