In the wake of a mass uprising that led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has obtained a freezing order for two properties in London owned by Shayan F. Rahman, the son of her close adviser and businessman Salman F. Rahman, according to The Guardian.
Property and company records show that Ahmed Shayan Fazlur Rahman, son of Salman Rahman—the founder of Beximco and Hasina’s former investment adviser—owns the two properties. One of them is a luxury apartment at 17 Grosvenor Square in central London, purchased in 2010 for £6.5 million. The other is a house in Gresham Gardens, North London, bought in 2011 for £1.2 million.
According to the UK electoral roll, Sheikh Hasina’s sister, Sheikh Rehana—mother of British MP and former City Minister Tulip Siddiq—had resided at the Gresham Gardens property. It remains unclear whether she still lives there. Tulip Siddiq’s name surfaced during corruption investigations launched by the interim Bangladeshi government, though she has denied all allegations and resigned from her position in January.
The NCA confirmed in a statement that it had secured the freezing order as part of an ongoing criminal probe, but declined to disclose further details. Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairman, Mohammad Abdul Momen, confirmed that both Salman and Shayan F. Rahman are suspects in a financial misappropriation investigation.
Documents reveal the properties were purchased through offshore entities based in the Isle of Man. A spokesperson for Shayan F. Rahman stated that their client strongly denies involvement in any wrongdoing and is prepared to cooperate fully with UK authorities. The spokesperson also emphasized the unstable political climate in Bangladesh, where numerous individuals face charges, and expressed hope that UK officials would take this into account.
Attempts to reach Salman F. Rahman and Sheikh Rehana for comment were unsuccessful.
