Acting BNP chair Tarique Rahman has said that, like any son, he feels a deep longing to be close to his mother during this difficult time. He added that returning to the country is not a decision he can make freely or entirely on his own at this moment.

In a post published on his verified Facebook page around 8:45 a.m. Bangladesh time on Saturday, he shared his reflections and appealed for continued prayers for his mother.

BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Doctors and party sources have described her condition as “extremely critical,” leaving supporters and party members deeply worried. Many believe Tarique Rahman may consider returning home given his mother’s condition.

Against this backdrop, he posted an appeal early this morning, urging everyone to keep praying for her recovery. The essence of his message is summarized below:

He noted that Begum Khaleda Zia, a former head of government, remains in intensive medical care in a highly fragile condition, and that people from all walks of life—regardless of political identity—have been praying sincerely for her recovery. According to him, the Chief Adviser has expressed both his wishes for her healing and a commitment to provide full support for her treatment.

Rahman also mentioned that medical teams at home and abroad continue to offer their professional service with utmost dedication, and that several friendly countries have signaled willingness to assist with advanced medical care if required.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Zia family, he thanked everyone for their kindness, prayers, and concern, and urged people to continue praying for her swift recovery.

He added that in such a distressing moment, he too feels a strong emotional urge to be near his mother, just as any child would. However, the circumstances surrounding his possible return are not entirely within his personal authority or decision-making power. He indicated that the matter is sensitive and not something he can elaborate on in detail.

Rahman concluded by saying that once the political and practical realities align, he and his family remain hopeful that the long period of waiting and uncertainty regarding his return will finally come to an end.
