If everything proceeds as planned, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is expected to be flown to London either just after midnight tonight (Thursday) or early tomorrow morning (Friday). The decision to transfer her was taken based on the recommendations of specialist doctors.
Speaking to reporters at Evercare Hospital before 3:00 pm today, her personal physician Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed the development.
Later in the afternoon, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir briefed the media from the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. He stated that an air ambulance—sent by the Emir of Qatar—is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka tonight. By early tomorrow, the aircraft is expected to depart for London with Khaleda Zia on board.
According to Dr. Zahid Hossain, the medical board unanimously agreed that she should be taken to a designated hospital in London using a Qatar Royal air ambulance. All necessary preparations have been completed to ensure she receives continuous treatment during the flight, even in challenging situations.
When asked about her current condition, he said the team is strictly following the medical board’s guidance. Three virtual consultations were held today with specialists, and doctors from the UK and China also examined her directly. They reviewed her latest medical reports together.
Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital for the past 12 days. Her overall condition remains largely unchanged, which continues to worry people across the country.
Hospital sources say her treatment is being supervised by a medical board led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, comprising both local and international experts.
According to BNP insiders, the infection in her lungs has slightly improved, but she is still dealing with cardiac complications. Other health issues remain mostly stable.
On Wednesday night, four specialist doctors from China arrived in Dhaka and immediately joined the medical board. Earlier in the day, British specialist Dr. Richard Beale reached Dhaka, visited Evercare Hospital, and reviewed her latest test results.
Khaleda Zia previously traveled to London in January for advanced medical care. She initially received treatment at a hospital there and later stayed at her son Tarique Rahman’s residence. After nearly four months, she returned to Bangladesh on 6 May.
Most recently, on 23 November, she was rushed to Evercare Hospital with breathing difficulties. After tests confirmed a lung infection, she was admitted. Her condition worsened early Sunday, prompting doctors to move her from the SDU to the CCU.
