The government has arranged the highest level of security surrounding the return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh. In addition to state measures, the BNP has also put its own security arrangements in place for him.
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that maximum security will be enforced across the capital on December 25 in connection with Tarique Rahman’s homecoming.
He stated that preparations have already been completed to ensure Tarique Rahman’s safe arrival in the country. Law enforcement agencies, he added, have been instructed to remain fully alert and work in close coordination. The adviser reiterated that the government remains firmly committed to maintaining public safety.
Speaking to BSS about the security issue, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Baharul Alam said that Tarique Rahman is a very important individual and that extensive security measures have been arranged for his protection. Members of law enforcement will be deployed both in uniform and plainclothes, while the BNP has also arranged personal security for him.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (DB) Md Shafiqul Islam said a sufficient number of intelligence officers will be deployed to ensure security during the return.
According to sources, Tarique Rahman will receive police escort and special protection while travelling after his arrival. Security will also be ensured at his residence and office, with both uniformed personnel and undercover intelligence officers assigned to his protection.
Police sources said a large number of officers will be deployed along the route from the airport to Gulshan, and members of the DMP’s SWAT team will also remain on duty. DMP officials noted that the highest level of security will be enforced across the city on the day of his return.
Anticipating a large gathering in the capital to welcome the party’s acting chairman, the BNP has already urged its leaders and activists to maintain discipline.
Party sources said Brigadier General (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam has been appointed as the chief security coordinator on behalf of the BNP to ensure Tarique Rahman’s safety from the airport to his residence in Gulshan. Under his leadership, multiple teams, including the Chairperson Security Force, will operate to provide multi-layered protection throughout the journey.
After nearly one and a half decades, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to return to Bangladesh from London on December 25. BNP leaders confirmed that he will arrive in Dhaka on that day and will be formally welcomed by the party.
