BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently receiving medical treatment, remains in a highly critical condition, according to members of her medical team. Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the medical board overseeing her care and also a BNP Standing Committee member, said she is passing through a very difficult and risky phase.
Responding to journalists’ questions about her latest health condition, Dr. Zahid Hossain said it would not be accurate to say that her condition has improved. He stated that her health remains extremely complicated and that she is going through a critical moment.
The update was given to reporters late Saturday night, around 12:30 am, in front of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, without any prior announcement. Khaleda Zia has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since November 23.
Dr. Zahid Hossain said that after her admission, her physical condition deteriorated significantly. Due to the worsening situation, she was first shifted from a cabin to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and later moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
He added that both local and international physicians are involved in her treatment, including her daughter-in-law, Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
After returning to Bangladesh from London following 17 years abroad, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman visited his mother at the hospital last Thursday. He again went to see her on Saturday night after completing his day’s political engagements and stayed there for more than two hours before leaving shortly before midnight.
Khaleda Zia is being treated under a medical board led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder, which includes specialists from home and abroad. She is suffering from multiple health complications, including diabetes, kidney disease, heart problems, and lung-related issues. Various medical tests are being conducted regularly as part of her ongoing treatment.
Although BNP leaders have said that arrangements were considered to take her abroad for advanced treatment, it could not be done. Doctors have advised that her physical condition is not suitable for air travel, and as a result, her treatment continues in the country.
