BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un).
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed told the media on Tuesday morning around 7:15am that the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman informed him at about 6:30am, saying, “Mother is no more.”
Earlier, BNP Media Cell member Atiqur Rahman Rumon said Khaleda Zia died around 6:00am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. Tarique Rahman and other family members were present at the hospital at the time.
Party leaders have said that her funeral prayers may be held on Wednesday at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
Khaleda Zia, widely known in Bangladesh’s political landscape as the “Uncompromising Leader,” had been suffering from multiple health complications for a long time. She received advanced medical treatment in London on January 7 this year, after which her condition showed some improvement. However, prolonged illness, physical strain, and advanced age gradually weakened her health. She was frequently hospitalized due to serious complications.
On November 23, she was admitted to Evercare Hospital for the final time. She remained there for over a month, but this time she did not respond to treatment. Honored by her supporters as “Deshanetri,” Khaleda Zia has now taken her final leave from the people of Bangladesh.
