Mirza Abbas Leads in Income, Salahuddin Tops in Cash Holdings
Among the BNP nominees contesting seats in Dhaka city and surrounding districts in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Mirza Abbas stands out as the highest earner in terms of annual income. According to his affidavit, Abbas earns Tk 92.64 million per year. A member of the party’s Standing Committee, he is contesting from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
While Abbas leads in yearly income, the largest amount of cash in hand among BNP candidates in Dhaka belongs to Dewan Mohammad Salahuddin, the party’s nominee for Dhaka-19 (Savar). His affidavit shows cash holdings amounting to Tk 32.02 million.
All BNP candidates submitted detailed asset and income declarations along with their nomination papers. The party has fielded candidates in 19 of Dhaka’s 20 constituencies. An analysis of these affidavits shows that 15 candidates listed business as their profession.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, contesting from Dhaka-17, identified politics as his profession. Agriculture was listed by Dhaka-3 candidate and Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. The only female BNP candidate in Dhaka, Sanzida Islam of Dhaka-14, identified herself as a homemaker. She is also a coordinator of “Mayer Dak,” an organization representing families of enforced disappearance victims.
Dhaka-13 candidate Bobby Hajjaj mentioned both teaching and business as his professions. He is the chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM). BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir earlier stated that Bobby Hajjaj would contest the election using the BNP’s election symbol.
Under election law, candidates must disclose ten categories of information in their affidavits, including profession, sources of income, educational background, case history, and details of assets owned by themselves and their dependents. Providing false information can lead to cancellation of candidacy, and even after winning, membership in parliament may be revoked if misinformation is proven. Mandatory submission of affidavits was introduced in the 2008 general election.
