Senior journalist Shafik Rehman, recalling former Prime Minister and BNP ex-chairperson Khaleda Zia, said, “Her greatest quality was that she openly declared herself courageous and deeply patriotic; she loved her country… Madam, hats off to you—you never left; you remain here and always will.”

He made these remarks today at a civic memorial gathering held in honor of Khaleda Zia, at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka.

Shafik Rehman also urged first-time voters in the upcoming national election to make informed decisions. Addressing young voters, he emphasized the importance of carefully considering various discussions and viewpoints before casting their votes.

He suggested that voters evaluate fundamental issues such as stabilizing prices of essential goods, maintaining law and order, protecting bank depositors, and creating new employment opportunities when making electoral choices.

The senior journalist stressed that election day should be a celebration, with citizens able to vote smoothly and safely. He called on law enforcement and relevant authorities to play a positive role in ensuring this.

Shafik Rehman also highlighted that grief should be transformed into strength through the exercise of voting rights, driving the democratic process forward. He warned against letting recent violence or isolated incidents disrupt the electoral process.

Touching on the country’s political situation, global context, and the democratic transfer of power, he expressed hope that a credible election would take place on schedule and that power would change hands through the will of the people.
