The BNP has called for the disclosure of all agreements related to the power and energy sector made during the Awami League's tenure. At a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Thursday, party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that the rampant corruption and mismanagement by the ruling party must not be overshadowed by political debates. He warned that without constant reminders, the public might forget the Awami League’s systematic corruption, pledging accountability if the BNP comes to power.
Former state minister and BNP Standing Committee member Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku presented an overview of alleged corruption in the energy sector, claiming that over BDT 3.33 trillion has been spent in the past 15 years, with nearly BDT 1 trillion lost in capacity charges. He accused companies like Summit, Aggreko International, and United Group of benefiting from these charges despite using faulty equipment. Tuku alleged that over 90 power plants were approved without proper tendering under indemnity laws, prioritizing quick profits over efficiency.
He further criticized the Quick Rental Power Plant system, initially intended for emergency use, which has continued for over 15 years, draining resources with minimal returns. Tuku also highlighted irregularities in importing electricity from India and alleged misuse of funds in pre-paid meter installations, claiming a family-linked syndicate was involved.
Additionally, Tuku alleged that BDT 500 billion from the Rooppur nuclear power plant project was misappropriated, implicating high-ranking officials and family members of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He warned that the energy sector could collapse by 2027 if corruption persists. Tuku accused former State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid of profiting from LNG projects, underscoring the urgent need for transparency and reform.
