A large cache of firearms and ammunition has been recovered from a residential building in the Beparipara area of Middle Badda in the capital during a raid conducted by a special joint force led by the Bangladesh Army. During the operation, Mehedi Hasan alias Dipu—a close associate of top criminal Subrata Bain—was arrested. According to police and intelligence sources, he is also a close associate of BNP candidate Qayyum.

Police said the raid was carried out at a third-floor apartment of a building owned by Mehedi Hasan, where 11 sophisticated foreign-made firearms and 394 rounds of ammunition were recovered. He was arrested along with the weapons and ammunition on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Badda Zone) Asaduzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said a case has been filed against Mehedi Hasan under the Arms Act, and he has been placed on a five-day remand for interrogation.

Close Associate of Subrata Bain

According to police sources, Mehedi Hasan alias Dipu had long been controlling criminal activities on behalf of top criminal Subrata Bain in areas including Rampura, Banasree, Badda, Vatara, Baridhara, and Gulshan. Police claim that more weapons are still in the possession of Mehedi Hasan and his associates. The recovered weapons are reportedly owned by Subrata Bain and another top criminal, Molla Masud.

It is worth noting that Subrata Bain and Molla Masud were arrested in a joint force operation in Kushtia town in May last year. Following their arrest, Mehedi Hasan allegedly continued to operate criminal activities across various parts of the capital on behalf of Subrata Bain.

Allegations of Murder, Extortion, and Weapon Rentals

Sources involved in the investigation said several criminals—including Wasir Mahmud Saeed alias Boro Saeed, Golam Mortuza Babu alias Madhu Babu, and Sohel alias Kanni Sohel—were associated with Mehedi Hasan. The group is accused of involvement in multiple killings over the past year.

A source from the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) said Mehedi Hasan and his associates worked as contract killers in different areas and also rented out weapons to criminals. Police claim that several weapons belonging to Subrata Bain are still in the possession of Mehedi Hasan and Madhu Babu.

Allegations of Political Links

Police and intelligence sources allege that Mehedi Hasan alias Dipu maintained close ties with several BNP leaders and activists. In particular, he allegedly had a close relationship with BNP candidate Qayyum. Investigation sources claim that he used political influence to establish dominance in the area, carry out extortion, and operate criminal activities.

Police sources also said he maintained close links with former Ward No. 37 councilor Md Jahangir Alam and his brother Alamgir.

Police stated that during remand interrogation, they are closely examining details regarding his associates, the source of the weapons, and his alleged political connections.
