Kugelman explained that the BNP has long been viewed as a dynastic party and has faced persistent allegations of corruption. According to him, the party still reflects many of the political practices that members of the Gen-Z protest movement have openly rejected.

He added that the BNP will now face significant pressure from the public and opposition groups to move beyond its traditional style of politics. In his view, if the new administration returns to authoritarian or retaliatory tactics, reform-minded citizens could become disillusioned and democratic progress may stall.

Observers believe the outcome of Bangladesh’s latest election is unlikely to create major tensions across the wider region.

“There is nothing comparable to this feeling,” Doha said. “We have endured years under authoritarian rule. Now it is time to rebuild our country.”
