Donald Trump has sent a congratulatory letter to Tarique Rahman following his appointment as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
In the message, Trump encouraged Dhaka to move forward with implementing existing trade agreements with the United States and to work toward finalizing new defense cooperation deals.
The letter was dispatched from White House on Wednesday, February 18 (Washington time), and was later shared by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry on its official X account on Thursday.
Trump described Rahman’s victory in the 13th parliamentary election as “historic” and expressed hope for a successful tenure. He emphasized that bilateral ties are built on mutual respect and shared interests in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region, where sovereign nations can prosper.
He also noted that advancing trade agreements would strengthen economic ties and benefit workers and farmers in both countries. On defense, Trump urged swift steps to finalize agreements that could enable Bangladesh’s military to access advanced U.S.-made equipment.
The U.S. president concluded by expressing his willingness to work closely with Rahman to further deepen relations and enhance prosperity and security for both nations, while also conveying confidence in U.S. Ambassador Brent Christensen.
