Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused opposition parties of staging street protests to conceal their internal divisions and political failures.
He alleged that while the country is grappling with multiple challenges, opposition parties have failed to play a constructive role and are instead attempting to mislead the public.
Rizvi made the remarks on Saturday at a rally organised by the Jatiyatabadi Textile Engineers Association of Bangladesh (JTEB) in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka. The rally was held to protest what the organisers described as planned anarchy and conspiracies by the Awami League. It was presided over by JTEB President Engineer Md. Fakhrul Alam.
Addressing the gathering, Rizvi said opposition parties repeatedly focused on complaints and demands without paying sufficient attention to national development or public welfare.
He alleged that the parties were looking for new excuses to take to the streets and organising protest programmes to divert attention from their own internal disputes.
BNP Urges Vigilance During Durga Puja
Speaking about Sharadiya Durga Puja, Rizvi said the Hindu community’s principal religious festival was underway across the country.
He said BNP leaders and activists at all levels had been given strict instructions to remain alert and vigilant to help ensure that the celebrations could take place peacefully, securely and with due religious solemnity.
Earlier on Saturday morning, Rizvi attended a Durga Puja pandal visit and an exchange of greetings with members of the Hindu community at Mirpur Central Temple in Dhaka, where he was the chief guest.
His remarks came as political tensions continued amid competing claims over the conduct and intentions of opposition parties.
