Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Sanaullah has stated that the Election Commission issued the official gazette naming BNP’s Ishraq Hossain as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation due to a 10-day legal obligation, even though they did not receive timely feedback from the Ministry of Law. The gazette was released on the government website on the night of April 27, following a court verdict that overturned the previous election result and declared Ishraq the rightful winner.
The commissioner also mentioned that the EC has implemented special measures across 56 areas to prevent the inclusion of Rohingya refugees in the voter list and will begin a verification process to eliminate duplicate voter ID cards. Additionally, the EC finalized and sent immediate reform proposals to the Cabinet Division for review.
The developments were discussed during the commission's fourth official meeting, held at Agargaon on April 28, chaired by CEC A.M.M. Nasir Uddin. Notably, the original 2020 election had declared Awami League’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh as mayor, a result contested by Ishraq—son of late BNP leader and former Dhaka City mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka—in a legal case filed on March 3, 2020. The electoral tribunal ruled in Ishraq's favor on March 27, 2025.
