Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring democratic governance and ensuring that power rests with its rightful owner—the people of Bangladesh. Speaking during a special convocation at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on Wednesday, he stressed that the government’s focus remains on peace, stability, and preparing for a free, fair, and transparent national election in February 2026.
Professor Yunus, currently on a three-day official visit to Malaysia, received an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business from UKM. In his acceptance speech, he described the ceremony as a great honour and said he was proud to accept the degree on behalf of the people of Bangladesh.
Highlighting his vision for the country, Yunus spoke of building a Bangladesh where governance is just, the economy is inclusive, and every citizen has the opportunity to succeed. He linked this goal to the youth-led protests of July and August 2024, when students and young people, he said, “stood up bravely against authoritarian rule,” with many sacrificing their lives for a future free from intimidation, discrimination, and injustice.
“The movement has given new meaning to our national identity and renewed hope for the future,” Yunus said. “Today we are determined to create a society where everyone can live with dignity and freedom.”
Outlining his government’s agenda, he said economic reform is key to a stronger and more resilient Bangladesh. Plans include fostering entrepreneurship, expanding investment in education and technology, and working closely with international and regional partners.
During his visit, Yunus met members of the Yunus Social Business Centre network and signed the guest book at UKM, where he also had an informal exchange with the King of Negeri Sembilan, the university’s Chancellor. His trip follows Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Bangladesh in October 2024.
