Under the influence of a deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal, Dhaka experienced continuous rainfall throughout Thursday (May 29), with light showers continuing into Friday (May 30). Over the last 24 hours, the capital recorded 196 mm of rainfall.
According to a special weather bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department at 7 a.m. Friday, the deep depression has moved inland and is currently situated over Gazipur and surrounding areas as a land depression. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across various regions of the country.
Meteorologist Shahinul Islam stated that the system is gradually weakening and is expected to turn into a low-pressure area by the afternoon. Rainfall may continue nationwide through Saturday, though it is expected to decrease gradually, especially in Barishal and Khulna divisions. Wind speed is also likely to slow down.
Chattogram division’s Maijdee Court in Noakhali recorded the highest rainfall at 285 mm, followed by Chandpur with 241 mm. All maritime ports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 due to strong winds over the sea.
Authorities have issued warnings for potential landslides in hilly regions including Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar, due to the possibility of excessive rainfall. Temporary waterlogging may also occur in parts of Dhaka and Chattogram city areas.
