The Emergence of VP Noor at Dhaka University

A new chapter in Bangladesh’s student politics began with the emergence of Nurul Haque Noor, popularly known as VP Noor. He came to the center of discussion overnight after winning the VP post of Dhaka University Student Council (DUCSU) elections. His leadership and movement influenced many young people and inspired them to take a different path from the traditional lines of student politics.

Nur was born in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district of Barisal division. His father Idris Hawladar is a businessman and former Union Parishad member and mother’s name is Nilufa Begum. Noor is the second among three brothers and five sisters. Noor studied up to class 7 at Char Biswas Janata Secondary School in Patuakhali. He completed secondary school in 2010 from the science department of Golam Nabi Secondary School in Gazipur and higher secondary school in 2012 from Uttara High School and College in Dhaka and was admitted to the English Department of Dhaka University in the academic year 2013-14.

DUCSU Election and Victory

The name of Nurul Haque Noor was first discussed as a candidate for the post of VP in the 2019 Dhaka University Central Student Council (DUCSU) election. It was a huge challenge for him to contest as a candidate for the post of VP in this election held after 28 long years. Despite competing with ruling party candidates, Noor won the election by a landslide, which is considered a major event in Bangladesh’s student politics. His victory proves that the desire for change is strong among the students.

Political Philosophy and Struggle

VP Noor in his political philosophy has always been vocal against injustice and adamant for the rights of students. Various agitations and protest programs under his leadership have received a massive response among the students. Noor believes that student politics is not limited to the welfare of students, but is a powerful tool for larger social and political change.

Under the leadership of VP Noor, the students got a new dimension of agitation. Movements on various issues including safe road movement and quota reform movement were led by him. By leading these movements, he gained great popularity among students across the country.

Current status and future plans

VP Noor is currently active in the political arena through the People’s Rights Council. He wants to contribute to social and political change in the country by entering mainstream politics from student politics. His political goals and ideals are to strengthen the country’s democratic structure and establish the rights of the common people.
