The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the private sector has increased at the consumer level in April by 32.30 taka per kilogram. As a result, the new price of the widely used 12 kg LPG cylinder has been set at 1,728 taka, up from 1,341 taka last month—marking a rise of 387 taka.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission announced the revised rates on Thursday, which will take effect from 6:00 PM today. Earlier, at the beginning of February, the price of a 12 kg cylinder was fixed at 1,356 taka. Later, on February 24, the price was reduced by 15 taka to 1,341 taka following a cut in import duties.
According to the commission, LPG cylinders are available in various sizes, and the new price has been set at 144.04 taka per kilogram. Prices for different cylinder sizes will be calculated based on this rate.
Although LPG prices are officially set each month, consumers often complain that the product is sold at higher rates in the market. The 12 kg cylinder, commonly used in households, is reportedly being sold at an extra 300 to 400 taka by retailers.
Meanwhile, the price of the 12.5 kg LPG cylinder supplied by government companies remains unchanged at 825 taka. On the other hand, the price of autogas used in vehicles has been increased to 79.77 taka per liter, up from 61.83 taka.
Since April 2021, the commission has been adjusting LPG prices regularly. The main components of LPG—propane and butane—are imported from abroad. Saudi Arabia’s Saudi Aramco publishes monthly benchmark prices for these components, known as Saudi Contract Price (CP). The commission uses this CP as a base to determine local LPG prices, along with average dollar exchange rates calculated from import invoices.
