Fuel Demand Surge Remains Uncontrolled in Bangladesh

Despite increased supply, Bangladesh is struggling to manage the rising demand for fuel, particularly octane. Long queues have become a common sight at filling stations, with drivers waiting for hours—and sometimes overnight—to purchase fuel.

Officials say the surge is largely driven by panic buying amid concerns over global supply disruptions linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Many consumers are purchasing more fuel than necessary, creating artificial shortages and putting pressure on the supply chain.

Although the government has slightly increased fuel distribution, the demand continues to outpace supply. Authorities are now considering technology-based solutions, such as digital tracking systems and fuel cards, to monitor purchases and prevent stockpiling.

Energy officials have confirmed that steps are being taken to introduce automated systems in Dhaka, similar to those already implemented in some districts, which have helped reduce congestion at fuel stations. Additionally, fuel supply to stations is being increased by around 10%.

Current reserves remain stable, with significant stocks of diesel, petrol, and octane available. More shipments—including a large consignment of octane—are expected to arrive soon, which may ease the situation.

Industry insiders suggest that there is no immediate risk of a fuel shortage, but better management is needed to prevent misuse. Experts recommend rationing systems and QR code-based monitoring, similar to measures used in other countries, to control excess purchasing and stabilize the market.

If global instability continues, analysts warn that public anxiety and overbuying behavior may persist, making it harder to normalize the fuel supply situation.
