Despite a record surge in soybean oil imports, a severe supply shortage persists in wholesale markets like Khatunganj. Bangladesh's monthly demand for soybean oil averages 87,000 tons, with a slight increase during Ramadan. However, in January alone, the country imported 117,000 tons of soybean oil and 300,000 tons of soybean seeds, producing an additional 45,000 tons of oil. This marks the highest monthly import volume in six years. Over the past ten days, multiple tankers carrying over 100,000 tons of soybean oil have arrived at ports, with at least three more expected this week.
On Tuesday, Chattogram City Mayor Shahadat Hossain and District Commissioner Farida Khanom set wholesale and retail prices for loose soybean oil at Tk 155 and Tk 160 per liter, respectively, effective until April 10. However, traders are disregarding this price cap. Mayor Hossain emphasized strict monitoring and legal action against hoarders and overpricing, warning that traders cannot exceed the fixed prices.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) reported that 57,000 tons of soybean oil were imported in the first 26 days of February, with additional shipments arriving at the month's end. Three tankers alone—MT Champion Avoni, MT Maersk Befort, and Avex—delivered 43,000 tons for TK Group. Other major importers, Meghna and City Group, have also received shipments, with a combined 50,000 tons for Meghna and 26,000 tons for City Group. Additionally, 59,438 tons of soybean seeds arrived on the MV Yoga, contributing to local production.
Despite these imports, market conditions remain dire. Consumers report price hikes and supply shortages, with retailers charging Tk 192 per liter instead of the government-fixed rate. The administration's price controls, set in December at Tk 157 for loose and Tk 175 for bottled oil, remain unenforced. The ongoing crisis highlights a gap between government regulations and market realities, leaving consumers struggling amid persistent price hikes and supply disruptions.
